The Greatest Elongation of Two Planets - Mercury in the West and Venus in the East
On March 24, we will be able to watch the combination of two interesting phenomena. In one day, two different planets will reach their greatest elongation - Mercury on the western and Venus on the eastern sky. This phenomenon occurs when planets reach their greatest angular distance from the Sun, giving us the unique opportunity to observe them in their brightest position for several days.
We'll have the best conditions to watch Mercury in the morning. However, it is one of the smallest planets in our solar system and is also very close to the Sun, which means we cannot do this without a telescope. Watching Venus will be much easier because it is almost as big as the Earth and located far away from our parent star. As a result, we will be able to see it in the night sky with the naked eye.
